GLAAD and Bonnier Publishing USA Announce Release of Second Book in LGBTQ Children’s Book Publishing Partnership

Jack (Not Jackie), is a powerful story of family love and acceptance for trans and gender non-binary young people

New York, NY – GLAAD, the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, and Bonnier Publishing USA today announced the release of Jack (Not Jackie) the second book in a partnership aimed at integrating and elevating positive LGBTQ representation in children’s literature.

OutBüro, Being focused on the professional and entrepreneur side of the LGBT community recognizes the author and book as an entrepreneur and LGBT community supporter.  When we go to work or to our business location, we don’t leave our family life at the door.  As an adoptive parent, I applaud this book for giving parents everywhere a tool to open dialog with their children.

Jack (Not Jackie) by Erica Silverman and illustrated by Holly Hatam is a heartwarming and gentle conversation starter about gender identity and gender expression, but more importantly, it is a story about the love between siblings and wholeheartedly accepting people for who they are. The story centers around a big sister, Susan, who learns to understand and appreciate that her younger sibling identifies as “Jack” rather than “Jackie.” The book also features a loving and supportive Mom, who listens to Jack and is patient with Susan.

“Today children of all ages are finding support and understanding from parents and caregivers when they express that their gender identity or gender expression doesn’t match the sex recorded on their birth certificate,” said Nick Adams, Director of Transgender Media and Representation at GLAAD. “The social transition portrayed in this book is simply and refreshingly a family listening to their child and following his lead as he tells them what name and pronoun he wants to use and how he wants to dress.”

This book is a continuation of Bonnier Publishing USA’s publishing partnership with GLAAD. Jack (Not Jackie) is currently available wherever books are sold, and a portion of the proceeds from the book will go to support GLAAD’s work to accelerate acceptance for LGBTQ people. The partnership will release at least four titles per year across various genres and formats for children up to the age of 14.

GLAAD and Bonnier Publishing USA launched their partnership in May 2018, with the release of picture book Prince & Knight, by Daniel Haack and illustrated by Stevie Lewis. Prince & Knight is an “illuminating fairy tale for young readers” (School Library Journal) where a heroic prince and a brave knight defeat a dragon, save a kingdom and fall in love in the process.
