Black Business Owners, Celebrities, Influencers, and Leaders Gather with Visa at CEO’s Making Waves for Black Women in Business, Helping Corporations Fulfill Commitment to Equality and Inclusion

Two-Day Conference Provides Vital Resources for Black Women in Business

OAKLAND, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–On October 26th and 27th, CEO’s Making Waves for Black Women In Business: Growth, Impact, & Community will kick off a two-day conference by welcoming Black women-owned businesses, industry leaders, and corporations in addressing the need for systemic change in leadership, gender, and race equality in a variety of different industries.

The two-day event will feature discussions from black business owners such as influencer Necole Kane – CEO/Founder of XONecole and Whitney Harper (Brand Manager/Creative Director for Rapper Sweetie) and (Host) Sports Broadcaster Rosalyn Gold-Onwude, along with many other amazing business professionals in different sectors who will share their insights on relevant topics and resources aimed at enhancing the approaches of Black professionals and CEO’s. By strengthening woman-owned companies within the Black community, CEO’s Making Waves will work on closing the 90% wealth gap faced by Black women in business today.

“This is a much-needed event to support the Black women in our communities starting in California with the large tech companies,” says Myeshia Jefferson, founder of Beauty Makes Cents LLC, a company dedicated to increasing entrepreneurial education through events, training, hands-on support, and empowerment.

Jefferson continues, “CEO’s Making Waves will help attendees tap into resources they may not know are available. Many black-owned businesses don’t need a handout, we need a hand up. As a Black entrepreneur, I understand firsthand the struggle of navigating the business world, and the challenges that Black women in business face to get access to the right people and positions that can open doors. Sometimes, we need more hands-on support to guide us to the next level. Many of the large organizations have the means and the resources to help.”

Aiming to connect start-ups and small business owners to companies with resources and mentors available for Black entrepreneurs, the event will act as a foundation for future growth and opportunities. Featuring an impressive lineup of keynote speakers, discussion panels, fireside chats, mentorship sessions, and workshops, CEO’s Making Waves will touch on a wide range of topics, such as entrepreneurship, intrapreneurship, the future of e-commerce, the entertainment industry, sports, wellness, women empowerment, and recruiting.

“This year will have virtual celebrity appearances from Akon, Niecy Nash, Tamar Braxton, and more; but next year we will host the event in-person where we can include interactive activities such as dancing, live music, and a yacht experience! We see this as a great opportunity for black women entrepreneurs to connect, network, and grow,” says Jefferson.

CEO’s Making Waves 2021 participants will also have the chance to win mentorships from top industry leaders through an exclusive guest contest. Organizations can make this an opportunity to build trust and loyalty, while more Black women gain access and support.

Registration is open to all. Remaining space is filling up quickly, so get your tickets soon! Visit CEO’s Making Waves to secure your tickets and learn more.

Anti-LGBTQ+ Laws Fall Like Dominoes In Poland As More Regions React to EU Pulling Funding

Last week Queer News Tonight reported on a southern region of Poland reversing their “LGBT-Free Zone” policy when the EU started to pull funding. Many part of Poland enacted the anti-LGBT laws in 2019, in an attempt by the country’s conservative Law and Justice party to “protect family values.” Now that the EU has pulled funding, 3 more regions of Poland reversed these laws Monday.

Swiss Overwhelmingly Vote To Approve Marriage Equality Law

On Sunday, a law that extends marriage to same-sex couples passed in Switzerland with overwhelming support. Swiss voters supported the “Marriage for All” law by a 64-36 percent margin in the referendum. Switzerland joins their neighboring countries of France, Germany, and Austria as well as many other countries in Europe that allow same-sex marriage. Maria Von Känel, co-president of the “Marriage for All” campaign told the Washington Blade, “It’s a great achievement. All cantons and 64.1 percent of Swiss voters have voted yes for marriage for all. Our partnerships and families are now recognized equally and legally.”

Is it Neutrality or Backlash? Schools Across the Country Are Banning Pride and BLM Flags

Utah’s Davis School District sent an email to teachers and administrators earlier this month claiming that banners in support of the Black and LGBTQ+ communities are banned under its official policies, as they view the flags as “politically charged”. The spokesperson claimed that Davis is merely “following state law” by disallowing Pride and BLM flags on its school campuses, but Utah’s rules on the subject are reportedly ambiguous. That uncertainty has led some schools to continue to flying LGBTQ+ banners even as others are cracking down. One school under Davis’ purview even interpreted the district-wide guidelines as applying to stickers and pins displaying Pride flags or pronouns. This follows a wave of anti-LGBTQ policies across the country.

Progress Continues on 10th Anniversary of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Repeal OutBuro LGBT professional entrepreneur online networking community gay lesbian bisexual transgender nonbinary

Progress Continues on 10th Anniversary of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Repeal

The following story is from an article I wrote for Queer News Tonight partners South Florida Gay News. Ten years ago this week, the odious policy known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) came to an end. The law prevented gay people from serving in the military. People who went public with their sexuality were kicked out, no matter how distinguished their service. Enacted in the 1990s, DADT was created to stop witch hunts of “suspected” homosexuals, meaning if you stayed in the closet and kept quiet you’d be left alone. American Veterans for Equal Rights (AVER), America’s oldest LGBT veterans service organization, hailed the anniversary of repeal. “AVER celebrates this important civil rights milestone, and we honor the long and determined grassroots effort by service members and veterans, men and women, to overturn the nearly 100-year-old policies that denied the freedom to serve to LGBT soldiers, marines, sailors, airmen and coastguardsmen. We acknowledge the diverse efforts, strategies, struggles and sacrifices by many individuals and organizations that led to the repeal of the discriminatory DADT law.” Get the full story in this week’s South Florida Gay News, on stands now.

President Biden calls for global support of the LGBTQ+ Community at the U.N. General Assembly

Tuesday morning President Biden spoke at the U.N. General Assembly. He spoke out for changes to fight Climate Change, discussed the ‘dysfunctional’ relationship between the US and China, and called for global unity to fight the pandemic. He also spoke in support of LGBTQ+ rights globally saying, “We all must defend the rights of LGBTQI individuals.” In his speech he specifically cited anti-LGBTQ crackdowns in Chechnya and Cameroon. He spoke after Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is a vocal opponent of LGBTQ rights, addressed the General Assembly.

America’s Incoming LGBTQ Rights Envoy Says Activists Are “Most Important Tool” For Change

Incoming U.S. Special Envoy to Advance the Human Rights of LGBTQI+ Persons, Jessica Stern, concluded her work as the Executive Director of OutRight Action International this week. She’s led the organization since September 2011. In a recent editorial she wrote, “There are two fundamentals to achieving LGBT+ liberation: diverse strategies and strong LGBT+ organizations. If there was an easy, one-size-fits-all solution, homophobia and transphobia would be a historical note. They aren’t, which is why we must have diverse tools in our toolbox for the right time and place.”

CUBA MAY BE SET TO OPEN DOOR FOR GAY MARRIAGE OutBuro LGBT professional entrepreneur online networking community gay lesbian bisexual transgender nonbary 2

CUBA MAY BE SET TO OPEN DOOR FOR GAY MARRIAGE

The draft of a new family code for Cuba released Wednesday proposes allowing same-sex couples to marry and adopt as well as giving children greater participation in decisions that affect them. The preliminary draft, which must be approved by Cuba’s parliament then go to a grassroots plebiscite, comes almost three years after the island’s communist government backed away from enshrining gay marriage protections in its new constitution in the face of opposition. Evangelical groups objected to the constitutional proposal to eliminate the description of marriage as a union of a man and woman, and change it to the union of “two people … with absolutely equal rights and obligations.” Cuba’s current family code dates from 1975 and has been overtaken by new family structures and social changes, legal experts say.
