LGBTQ+ Romanians took to the streets this past weekend to demand equality as the Eastern European country weight harsh new restrictions on the community. Organizers estimated that as many as ten thousand marched as they turned out for Bucharest Pride on Saturday, the first such gathering held in Romania’s capital since the onslaught of COVID 19. The last Pride event took place in 2019 shortly after a referendum to constitutionally ban same-sex marriage failed at the ballot due to low voter turnout. Activist Tidora Ionrotoru claimed the goal of Pride organizer remains to ask for the very basics when it comes to LGBTQ+ equality. The 2021 Pride event coincides with the new challenges facing the LGBTQ+ community not only from the ongoing global pandemic but also a potential wave of discriminatory legislation inspired by neighboring Hungary a pair of political parties, the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians and an Alliance of Uniting Romanians, are planning to lobby for new restrictions on the teaching of LGBTQ+ identities in schools when the Parliament of Romania meets in September.
